How to Prevent Costly Plumbing Problems Before They Start

Let’s be honest: nobody wants to deal with a surprise plumbing disaster, especially when it means water everywhere, a big repair bill, or both. The good news? Most plumbing problems can be avoided with a bit of regular maintenance. Here are my top tips to keep your home’s plumbing running smooth and help you avoid those expensive headaches.

1. Check for Leaks Under Sinks and Around Toilets

A quick look under your sinks and behind your toilets once a month can save you a lot of trouble. Look for any signs of moisture, drips, or water stains. Even a small leak can turn into a big problem (and a bigger bill) if ignored.

2. Dump Hot Water Down Kitchen Sinks Every Two Weeks

Grease is the enemy of kitchen drains. Even if you’re careful, a bit of grease always sneaks in. Pouring a kettle of hot (not boiling) water down your kitchen sink every couple of weeks helps melt and flush away grease before it causes a clog. This simple habit keeps your drains flowing and saves you from a nasty backup.

3. Test Your Sump Pump Monthly

Don’t wait until a big rainstorm to find out your sump pump isn’t working. Even if it hardly ever runs, it’s worth pouring a bucket of water into the pit at least once a month to make sure it kicks on. If it doesn’t, get it checked or replaced—trust me, a working sump pump is a lot cheaper than a flooded basement.

4. Know How to Shut Off Your Main Water Valve

If a pipe bursts or something goes wrong, shutting off your main water supply fast can make all the difference. Make sure you know where your main shut-off valve is and that it turns easily. If it’s stuck, now’s the time to fix it—not during an emergency.

5. Insulate Pipes Before Winter

Frozen pipes are a common problem in Newmarket and the surrounding area. Insulating exposed pipes, especially in basements, crawlspaces, or along exterior walls, is a simple job that can prevent expensive burst pipes when the temperature drops.

Final Thoughts

A little maintenance goes a long way. If you have questions about any of these tips or want a professional eye on your plumbing, give me a call or text. I’m always happy to help local homeowners keep things flowing the right way.
